NEPTUNE'S MERCY by Kim Appleton who sent this amazing story about her quilt.

"Quite a while ago, you created a sunset sky for me. I explained that I was doing a quilt of a mermaid for my daughter’s 30th birthday. Well, she will be 32 in June and the quilt is finally done. I thought you would like to see the final result. There is also a little bit of a background story here too. My daughter is a chef. After culinary school, she ended up working on tall ships. In February 2010, she was the chef aboard the tall ship, SV Concordia, which was a Floating classroom with high school and gap year students. The ship was about 300 miles off the coast of Brazil when there was a microburst and the ship sank. Everyone survived, but they spent about 48 hours in life rafts before being picked up by a Philippine freighter. The mermaid in the quilt is Ashley. The silk in the mermaid tail is from a trip Ashley made to Singapore and Thailand where she was doing a semester abroad. The ship in the background is the HMS Bounty (another ship Ashley worked on). The orange starfish are made from the life vest from the Concordia. The mermaid is holding a black pearl, which symbolizes surviving a shipwreck. I’ve titled the quilt “Neptune’s Mercy”. This was the most difficult project I’ve ever undertaken and I will never do anything like it again. Your sky gives the picture so much depth. Thank you."

Sails was the first quilt I designed using predominately hand-painted fabrics.
